The Tschuggen Grand Hotel ***** A Weekend Getaway!

The Tschuggen Grand Hotel ***** A Weekend Getaway!

Set on a hilltop in Arosa the Tschuggen Grand Hotel faces a beautiful chain of Alpine Mountains at an altitude of 1800 meters.  The air is clean, crisp and the sun is already warming our faces as we approach the main entrance. Before I could open my car door a young man was there to assist, he welcomed us by name and asked if he could park our car and bring up our luggage. Oh yes, please!  A little baffled (and excited for what was yet to come) we handed over our keys and made our way to the reception desk where we were warmly greeted by the Executive Assistant Manager, Leonie Schefenacker,  and a friendly receptionist. Our room was ready, but perhaps we would like to have a quick tour of the hotel?  With delight we were shown the newly refurbished grand hotel by renowned designer Carlo Rampazzi, whose attention to detail seems unmatched.  An eclectic collection of furniture, sculptures, painting, colors and recurring themes such as elements inspired by nature can be found through the hotel whether it be in the hand painted wall paper found on each floor,  or the custom designed carpet that gives the impression that a thousand beautiful leaves just blew into the reception.

The main lobby is arranged in various comfortable seating areas thoughtful arranged for relaxation, cocktails, gatherings and the like.  After an easy and communicative tour of the hotel, we were brought up to our Junior Suite.  Needless to say, our luggage was happily awaiting us.  Just perfect!  At this point, there was only one thing left to do, and that was to open a nice bottle of white wine from our mini bar and enjoy a glass with a foretaste of the weekend that lay ahead.  Our suite featured a master bedroom, two bathrooms ( excellent!) and a living room. Oh and not to forget two balconies overlooking the breathtaking mountains. Cheers to that!

The Tschuggen Grand Hotels offers a Tepee experience package from the 10th of July to 9th of September.  This package includes: A one night stay at the Tschuggen Grand Hotel with breakfast, one overnight stay in a private tepee including dinner and breakfast at the Alpenblick as well a bottle of champagne in your Tepee. The Tschuggen Bergoase Spa and the use of the exclusive Tschuggen Express are also included.  Horseback riding to the Schwellisee and fly fishing can also be organized at an additional cost.

This is the package we were about to experience for our weekend getaway.  After our glass of wine, we packed our overnight bags and put on our hiking boots to make our way over to the tepees.  We did cheat just a little and had a quick test drive with the hotels Tesla Model X which drove us half way up, which I could only recommend unless you are very eager to walk the whole distance.

After the midpoint, we walked through the green fields and up a winding path for approx. 20 minutes until we reached the Alpenblick Restaurant.  The Tepees are located right beside the restaurant.  We were the only guests that evening, though the next day all the Tepees were booked out.  Lucky us! – We had the whole place to ourselves!  We arrived about 18:30 and the Alpenblick team was already waiting for us.

We were shown to our Tepee and then invited to have dinner on the Terrace. A hardy Curry Wurst and a delicious double chocolate tart were enjoyed. By the time we finished our dinner the sun was beginning to set, another bottle of wine was ordered and with lively conversation we settled into the night.

As we awoke the next morning and opened our Tepee flap a small group of goats came to greet us with their little bells chiming.  The sun was rising over the vast mountain range and the weather was beautiful.  Fresh air and the smell of coffee got us out of our warm duvets as we headed to the Alpenblick (20 feet away) for a delicious mountain breakfast.

Soon after we were met by Margarethe Schütz, named “Spa Manager of the year 2017” by Bilanz magazine from the Bergoase who was leading a small group of guests around the Schwellisee for a wellness walk.  We joined them for a relaxing one and a half hour scenic hike around the lake.  When we arrived back at the Alpenblick healthy smoothies, detox drinks, and snacks were served. As the hiking group walked back to the Tschuggen, we weren’t quite ready to leave just yet, instead, we took a quick nap facing the mountains inviting the sun to warm our faces once again and later ordered a light lunch.  Eventually, we did walk back to the Tschuggen Grand Hotel for it was time to prepare for our Spa Treatments 🙂

Armed with our soft bathrobes and slippers we made our way down the halls to the Bergoase, a 5000 sq. meter spa designed by Swiss star Architect Mario Botta.  The Bergoase opened its doors in 2006 and it’s truly something to behold. Designed mindfully with its surroundings, the Bergoase was built into the foot of the mountain. Nine prominent glass sails capture the light and channel it back into the mountain to the Bergoase.  The unique architecture and the bold concept of the glass sails “bear witness to something new” – Mario Botta.  The setting is pure relaxation with tranquil waters, minimalistic design, spacious surroundings and attentive service all with your well being at heart.

The Bergoase boasts In-and outdoor relaxation pool with various features, a swim and sport pool, children’s pool, Kneipp trail and Rosa rock grotto, relaxation areas in and outdoors.  2 private Spa suites, Saunas with fireplace, steam room, ice and shower zone, 12 individual furnished treatment rooms, fitness center, hairdresser and even a dermatologist that is available upon request of the hotel.  This, of course, means…ladies, should you have any little things you need to have done you can do it here! 🙂
I have to admit, I love massages.  At the Bergoase, I had the Aroma Oil Massage and I knew 10 seconds into the massage that this one was going to be a good one!   My friend selected the Sensai facial and she too was absolutely elated with the outcome.  Her facial took a little longer than my message so we met up at the pool upstairs, the spa is spaciously spread out over four floors.  Both of us absolutely relaxed and happy… We made our way back to our room… for we had to get ready for the evening.
A quick change of clothes, out of our sandals (slippers) and into our heels we got dressed up for our dinner reservation at La Vetta, a 1 Michelin Star and 16 Gault&Millau Point Restaurant at the Tschuggen Grand Hotel. We couldn’t be more excited!  Set in a casual but elegant setting our head chef Leopold Ott spoiled us with a 6-course culinary extravaganza with wine pairing.  Definitely, a dinner to commemorate and not to be missed!

The next morning we awoke to our stunning view once again.  We went downstairs to the Grand Restaurant for a magnificent breakfast buffet with à la carte options.  We were seated by the window (there’s just no escaping these fantastic mountains!) as we thoroughly enjoyed the huge assortment of breakfast delicacies.  I would be remiss if I did not point out that the breakfast buffet was outstanding!
One last thing we needed to do before headed home and that was to ride the Private Tschuggen Express. The hotels very own mountain railway exclusively for hotel guests with panoramic cabins that will take you up the mountain in only 2.5 minutes where you can either hike in the warmer months or connect directly with the ski slopes.  The Tschuggen Grand Hotel really does make everything so easy for their guests.  I love skiing but sometimes the effort it takes makes me shy away from a quick weekend trip. At the Tschuggen lugging your ski equipment, transferring with a bus to the slopes is a thing of the past.  The Tschuggen Express brings you right up to the ski slopes, connects you with the Hörnli and the new 1.7km long Urden Valley aerial tramway connecting you with the Lenzerheide ski resort giving you a total of 255km of prepared ski slopes at a maximum altitude of 2’865 meters above sea-level.  Snow is pretty much guaranteed up here!

CHAMP Sports offers recreational programs for children and adults that emphasize FUN What has most impressed me about the Tschuggen Grand Hotel is its uncomplicated sophistication. Guests are made to feel at home here, for this reason, some guests have been returning year after year for decades with the tradition already passed on to new generations.  It is obvious that this is an impeccably managed hotel with individual service and each guest well-being at heart.
