HOTEL EDEN ROC ***** in Ascona Hotel Review
The Hotel Eden Roc is located in Ascona, in the Italian speaking part of Switzerland in the Canton of Ticino which is just a stone’s throw from the Italian border and located idyllically right on the shores of the grand Lago Maggiore.
Eden Roc’s location is second to none, and the view is simply the best!
Ascona lies 196 meters above sea level making it the lowest laying town in Switzerland. It’s a charming medieval town with cobblestone streets, a promenade dotted with cafés, restaurants and bars, luxury boutiques, a 16th Century Church, historic parks, and museums. It is the Riviera of Switzerland with Mediterranean flair but meticulously organized by the Swiss.
We arrived in Locarno by train a comfortable and easy two and a half hour journey from Zurich. A car was organized by the Eden Roc to pick us up and from there it was a short 10 min drive to Ascona.
We were shown to our room, a gorgeous Suite facing South with two balconies and a full panoramic view of the lake and mountains spread out in front of us. Just magnificent!
Our room featured a King size bed, a sitting room, a small dining area and a full bath with toiletries from Molton Brown. The room was spacious and luxurious with detail to color, eclectic furnishings and simply an air of Dolce Vita – inspiring us to enjoy the here and now! It’s the kind of room you want to make sure to spend a little time in during your stay, to enjoy a nice glass of wine on your balcony and watch the sunset over the mountain tops. Which is precisely what we did….
The Hotel is opened year round and has 34 junior suites, 3 grand suites and 42 deluxe double rooms. In 2010 The Eden Roc added 16 additional rooms with their Marina wing which boasts a more youthful design, bringing the total up to 95 guest rooms. Also in 2010 a 2000 square meter spa opened its doors to pamper its guests.
The interior of the hotel is designed by Carlo Rampazzi, a collage of colorful patterns, materials and objects mixed and matched creating a unique ambiance which only Carlo Rampazzi can be bold enough to pull together. An Ascona native Mr. Rampazzi has designed the interiors all of the Tschuggen Groups’ hotels, each with his distinct signature style.
Dining at the Eden Roc will leave you with some culinary choices to make… 3 out of the 5 restaurants have been awarded Gault Millau points, one of the restaurants is more trendy and chic while the last one is located at the piazza in Ascona. For this reason, The Eden Roc has created the “Resort Dine Around” offer. For CHF. 70- per person per day guests can enjoy lunch or dinner at any of their restaurants.
La Brezza’s head Chef Salvatore Frequente , originally from Sicily, will delight your pallets with light Mediterranean cuisine with 17 Gault Millau points
Restaurant Eden Roc with 15 Gault Millau points
La Casetta located right on the lake with 14 Gault Millau points will delight with homemade pasta dishes and a wide range of grill specialties.
Marina which is Trendy Chic is located right by the lake.
Albergo Carcani is a 3-star hotel located on the promenade which also belongs to the Eden Roc.
The choice is yours! Buon appetito!
The grounds are meticulously kept. Two outdoor pools lined with palm trees, comfy lawn chairs and a variety of outdoor seating options for drinks or light snacks makes this the perfect place to relax for the day. A full on kids club will keep your children or teenagers entertained with relaxed activities such as cooking classes, extensive water sports or even a Children’s Etiquette Course – YES PLEASE-sign them up!
All this can take place over there -while you finally get around to reading that book you’ve been saving for the holidays — with a refreshing glass of chardonnay by your side – hopefully!
The hotel offers a wide verity of leisure activities for adults as well. 18 scenic golf courses are within easy reach of the hotel, as well tennis courts, mountain trails, Go carts for the young at heart, skydiving, and the list goes on… Even a trip to Milano is only a short one and a half hours drive away. If you want to enjoy the lake, you can book the hotels Gandria motorboat at the concierge free of charge and take it out for a spin perhaps to visit the beautiful botanical gardens at the Isole Di Brissago which is only a 10 min boat ride away. We gave it a try – our captain, the fabulous, Clifford Lilley!
We were invited to the Eden Roc for the event “Deliciousticino” and it was time to get ready. So off came our sandals and on with our heels it was time to go downstairs and put our cooking aprons on. We had a date with 3 Star Michelin Chef, Enrico Cerea from Restaurant Da Vittorio -Bergamo. An exclusive cooking class was about to begin. On the menu two classic dishes Risotto and Pasta with tomato sauce. I was excited to watch this star Chef cook these two staple dishes, which I thought were perfect choices because you know when I get home, I am going to try to replicate them!
After our cooking class, we were invited to experience a “Kitchen Party” in the profession kitchen of La Brezza Restaurant and meet the Head Chef Salvatore Frequente and the General Manager of the Eden Roc, Andreas Gartmann. I have never been in a proffesional kitchen before and it was quite impressive to see the different stations and how the preperation of the food is organized. The setting for the Ktichen Party was fun, a DJ kept us in swing and Salvatore Frequente delighted our tast buds with delicious and beautifully prepared food.
The next day after breakfast our Culinary Journey continued at the Grotto America located in the town of Ponte Brolla right by the Maggia River. The Grotto is over 300 years old and the name “America” was derived because this is where the people of Tessin would eat one last meal before they embarked a boat to immigrated to America via Genoa.
Here we met with knowledgeable and sympathetic local producers who explained to us the conditions and techniques they use to produce their products. The environment is very much a central theme. Making or growing their crops respectfully for future generations is a challenge that needs to be addressed now so that small specialty producers like themselves can continue and survive in an ever-growing globalized market.

An easy and carefree afternoon was spent tasting and talking to the producers at Grotto America. Thank you!
Who would have thought that Tessin grows its own Tea? Well in Monte Verità you can visit a Zen Garden and participate in a tea ceremony. If you google Monte Verità you will find a long history of political dogma, vegetarian Utopia, and the road less traveled between Capitalism and Communism. in 1900 a group of intellectuals came upon Monte Veritâ and found it to be the perfect location upon the hill to grow their community. Mostly they lay naked sunbathing while tending to the gardens and reading poetry to one another. Not bad…but a bit tempi passati…. Today you can drink tea in a tranquil and relaxing atmosphere.
One last look at the Lago Maggiore before we have to pack our bags and say good-bye… for now!
We spent two wonderful days at the Eden Roc in mid October. What has impressed me the most about the Eden Roc is its friendly relaxed atmosphere. This is a place for holidays, whether you are a party of two or a family with small or teenaged children. Everyone is welcome and everyone will find what they are looking for. The grand view of the Lago Maggiore at your feet brings with it a tranquility and a peacefulness that perhaps can be described as dolce vita!
